If you would like to see the world’s biggest collection of vintage airplanes, then the Fantasy of Flight attraction is the place to visit when you are in Orlando. This fascinating exhibition combines inter-active exhibits, aerial shows, and a huge collection of historic planes to create an attraction that was named “Orlando’s Best Kept Secret” in a recent newspaper poll.

The exhibit was opened by Kermit Weeks, who wanted to represent all eras of aviation history starting from the earliest flights and continuing up to the 1950s. Some of the aircraft on display have been restored to their original condition and others have been left in the condition that they were in when they were acquired.

Planes on display include the B-17 Flying Fortress, P-51C Mustang, MK-16 Spitfire, and many other stand-out airplanes from the years 1900 to 1950. The facility is located on a 2,000 acre plot and includes enough attractions and activities to keep you busy for an enjoyable three to five hour visit.

The exhibitions are grouped into early flight, beginning with the bi-planes of the early 1900s, and then going to the World War I period when airplanes started to play a role in the mechanized warfare of the modern era. The World War II era is shown with the B-17 Flying Fortress being the star attraction.

In addition to an array of 40 vintage planes, there is also an interactive section where you can build your own paper airplane, then set it free to see how far it gets through the Flight Center’s fly zone. There is also a state-of-the art gliding simulator where you can feel what it was like to pilot a hot air balloon. You can also take control of a Corsair Fighter on a World War II aircraft carrier and try to shoot down enemy aircraft.

For many people the highlight of any visit to Fantasy of Flight is the aircraft of the day demonstration when a vintage plane is rolled out, and there is a question and answer session in which the pilot gives some of the history of the airplane. Then the pilot takes the plane aloft for an aerial demonstration in the skies above the facility.

For every perfectly restored airplane in the Art Deco display hangars, two airplanes await restoration in the back lot. Guests can inspect an eclectic collection of military aviation artifacts and even historic planes that were used in Hollywood. A trip to the restoration workshops will give you an insight into the problems and solutions that this center uses to restore old aircraft into planes that have won awards for historical restoration.

Like any attraction of this type, Fantasy of Flight has a souvenir shop where you can pick up books, videos, and Tee shirts that are flight-themed. You can also get a snack at their art-deco diner which is open every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fantasy of Flight is located at 1400 Broadway Blvd. S.E., Polk City, FL 33868,

(863)984-3500 and their website is www.fantasyoflflight.com

Cars are a necessary part of our lives today. However, we also drive cars which suit our personal tastes and for pure enjoyment. Your car makes a major statement about your personality. Your vehicles are also a major investment and you want to do everything you can to keep them looking good for a long time. No matter what type of vehicle you have, whether it is a new car or a classic you should cover it with a car cover when not in use.The muscle car era has probably given us some of the most desirable and collectable cars in history. Even today, muscle cars can be seen and are still in high demand. They have a distinctive look with their wide profiles, sharp lines and plenty of chrome. Their looks are muscular and the V8 engines fast. Some of the cars that fit into this category include the Dodge Charger and the Pontiac GTO.To be classified as a muscle car the vehicle has to meet some criteria. It is a mid size vehicle with a V8 engine and was produced between 1965 and 1973. The muscle car models had the added V8 engine and special trims. They usually handled better because they had optimal suspension and braking. The first baby boom generation coincided with the muscle car era. At this time, WWII had just ended and the soldiers came home and before long there were babies being born everywhere. At this same time the cars of this time period were pretty conservative when it came to speed and styling. The new baby boomers were attracted to the muscle car for two reasons. One being the price and the other was the power and speed. Before this if you wanted a faster car you had to have it custom built and that took a lot of time and money. This changed in 1964 when the Pontiac Tempest offered a GTO package that added a V8 engine and floor shifted transmission. It also had GTO badges and special trim.In 1965, along came the Ford Mustang. The Mustang is technically called a Pony Car because it is small and compact with a big engine. However, they are usually put in the same category as a muscle car. During the first two years of production of the Mustang there were over 1.5 million models sold.Just as the muscle car craze was in top speed, there were three things that happened to put an end to the muscle car era. As the cars got bigger and more powerful, the insurance companies started adding large surcharges to these high powered cars. This helped to push the muscle cars out of the young drivers price range. At this same time Congress was starting to take a harder stance on controlling vehicle emissions. In 1973 leaded gasoline was banned and automakers had to shift from making more powerful cars to ones that had lower emissions. The final reason for the end of the muscle car was the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. Gas became very scarce at this time and auto makers started making cars that were smaller, more compact and fuel efficient.Just remember no matter what type of car you have, you should keep it protected with a custom car cover when not in use.

Choosing the right amplifier for your guitar is by no means an easy task. Usually a guitarist will think of style, as well as price first, when considering options. Assuming you have bought a guitar recently, this guide will suggest a few tips, for buying a new or used amplifier. There are dozens on the market – with low to “sky’s the limit” prices. Assuming that you are a beginning or aspiring guitarist, this guide should give you some guidance. Perhaps you have just bought a Fender, Epiphone, Gibson, Dean, Ibanez, Kramer or other guitar, of fairly good to good quality, you will need a good amp to compliment your style. One cannot think of a guitarist performing live, without thinking about their guitar to some extent. Visualizing Jimi Hendrix’s “Stratocaster” with a wall of amplifiers behind him, — yes the much emulated and desired Marshall Stacks, which are quite expensive. Eric Clapton, in his early years, preferred Marshalls as well, though he did also prefer to play a Les Paul, or his legendary “The Fool” SG, before he switched over to a Stratocaster as well. Speaking of “The Fool’s” current owner, Todd Rundgren, who prefers an old Fender Mustang, is known to like the crispness of Peavey amplifiers. I have owned several Peavey amplifiers, including a P.A. and must admit, they are really hard to beat for clarity of sound. I also owned a Marshall Stack 100 Watts at one time, and attribute much hearing loss from it. Honestly, I think the same classic sound, with less decibels can be achieved, through smaller amps.Really you must ask yourself, in relation to the guitar you have, what kind of sound are you wishing to project? Will this be acoustic? Straight ahead Rock and Roll? Country? Blues? Heavy Metal? What kind of budget are you on? If you are like me, I would rather start with a smaller amplifier to get a feel, for how I like the sound and how it sounds with the guitar.SOLID STATE VS. TUBE AMPLIFIERSThere are many guitar purists who swear by tube amplifiers over solid state. They want that warm crunch or presence of vintage tube analog sound. The cost of a vintage amplifier is expensive. One can also emulate or simulate the sound of a tube amplifier, from effects pedals, such as Ibanez Tube Screamer, which is quite popular, for this purpose. Behringer and Peavey have smaller amps which sound fairly good, with trans-tube technology, in relation to the vintage Fenders, Vox, and Marshalls. But for our purposes, we shall focus on solid state amplifiers due to cost for the beginner, versatility, and the simple fact, that digitally the sound can be reproduced, to an extent, only a professional would notice.$100 BudgetLet us assume that you have $100 to spend on an amplifier at this time. Note, you can always add effects pedals. In addition, due to digital technology, you can also purchase pedals which will simulate all the classic and vintage amplifiers. There are inexpensive practice amplifiers out there ranging from $30-80, but it would be safe to say, that the bedroom, backstage or den is the only context you will be able to use them in. Usually they are about 10 Watts of power, although good in tone, you may want to consider something that can be used in other atmospheres, such as jamming along with friends, or even having enough power for small clubs, or coffeehouses. Among those smaller amps for practice:Rogue, Peavey Audition, Rocktron, Ibanez, Behringer V Tone, Kustom, Fender Frontman 15GBehringer Ultracoustic, Pignose, even a 10 Watt MarshallThese amplifiers may be what you are seeking if you are considering to mic them through a P.A. System, or you really just want an amplifier, to jam along with songs in the comfort of your bedroom, but it is best to consider amps starting in the 15 watt range and going up from there. By the way, don’t feel embarrassed by the use of pedals and effects you will find that most guitarists use them.Lastly, you may want to get a custom handmade amp built for you by someone like Jack at jacksaxe.com. Custom amps have the advantage of being built to your desires and needs. Whatever you do, make sure that you have done your research before buying an amp. You will be glad you did.

Any good red blooded American man loves his muscle car, and that is a trait that he will never lose. I have had a love for the muscle car since I was a young boy. The love has only grown stronger with age, you know the old saying, the only difference between a boy, and a man is the price of his toys.

Nothing could be more true, y if you love muscle cars as a kid, you more them likely will love them as an adult. The biggest difference it hat you now have the means to buy them, well hopefully. A muscle car will be in your heart forever.

As a kid you love the sound of a true muscle car, and you love the way that they look, but most of all you love the power if you get to ride in one as a kid. As an adult you want to buy a muscle car, and modify it to meet you idea of what it should be.

Usually as a man your looking for custom paint, and a super high performance engine. You don’t really care how you achieve these two things either, as long as the car turns out the way that you think it should.

With the muscle car, most of us men have a preference as to what manufacture we like, I always loved the Chevrolet Camaro, but another man my love the Ford Mustang, or the Dodge Charger. It doesn’t really matter as long as you love your muscle car.

We love the hot summer heights down on the main drag showing off our muscle cars. We love to win the race, and we love to cover the seat with the prettiest girls in town. But most of all it’s about making our car be what we ant it to be, and perform the way that it should.

If we go out on a weekend and lose a race, you can bet that we are in the garage squeezing more power out of the muscle car. This is a constant battle, we add superchargers, nitrous, and fuel injection to make our muscle car win the race.

We love the huge obnoxious loppy camshaft that only we can stand to be around. We can’t wait to add more power, or customize the paint a bit more. Yes we love to to show off our work of art. We try to create a car that we have never seen before, a true one of a kind masterpiece.

For most muscle car freaks, their muscle car is a feat which as never been accomplished by any other man, and can never be done again. They are special to us, they give us a sense of joy that nothing else can do, and we love them for it, nothing is quite like a muscle car.

There is no doubt that we can spend a lot of time making our muscle cars what we want them to be. But nothing else comes even close to the sense of satisfaction that we get from building a muscle car.

As you’re driving through McMinnville, Oregon on Highway 18, it’s impossible to miss the expansive modern new buildings that make up the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. Your first clue that this has something to do with aviation is the giant 747 airliner parked out front – not your typical office sign.

Our visit to the museum was quite by accident – we were in the area headed toward the Oregon Coast and were amazed at the mammoth buildings we saw along the highway. Then we saw the sign – and the airplane – and it all came together for us. We had heard about the Evergreen Museum but hadn’t realized it would be directly on our route to the coast.

We enjoy visiting aircraft museums and this was one of the best we’ve seen. The museum is generally divided into two areas: aviation and space. There are separate charges to visit each area or you can buy a combined ticket. Once you get inside you’ll be amazed at the aircraft that are on display – for example, the gigantic Spruce Goose, the famous eight-propeller Howard Hughes Flying Boat, which is in pristine condition, dwarfing all other aircraft in the aviation exhibit building. This alone is worth visiting the Evergreen Museum because of its unique role in aviation history.

And that’s just the beginning. Examples of just about every type of aircraft you can imagine are on full display allowing visitors an up-close look at these planes and helicopters, as well as complete information about why the particular aircraft are important. Over on the space side, there are numerous displays of rockets and spacecraft and informative explanations about how and why they all came about. Whatever your age, the museum is a great learning experience.

The museum is dedicated to Captain Michael King Smith who was raised in McMinnville, Oregon, and graduated from McMinnville High School 1984. He later graduated first in his class from Columbus Air Force Base. He also received many prestigious awards and later became an F-15 pilot for the 123rd Fighter Squadron of the Oregon Air National Guard. Captain Smith died in a 1995 automobile accident.

With an IMAX show also available at the Evergreen Museum, it’s suggested that you allow five hours to see all of the aircraft, spacecraft and exhibits on display at the Evergreen. The whole family will enjoy learning about these aircraft and, in many cases, actually going inside the aircraft to feel what it might have been like to fly in these vintage craft. For more information on the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, call 503-434-4185.

There are examples of aviation history all over the Northwest, but many are concentrated in the Seattle-Everett area because of the influence of Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer that has produced thousands of aircraft in Puget Sound factories. Here are some examples of other aviation-oriented visitor centers:

Museum of Flight – Boeing Field, Seattle, WA 206-764-5720 The Museum of Flight is said to be one of the largest air and space museums in the world, and more than 400,000 people visit the site each year. There are more than 150 aircraft and spacecraft, and you’ll be able to also see the Red Barn – where the Boeing Company first started. The museum includes some of the largest air and space archives on the West Coast.

Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour – Paine Field (west side), Mukilteo, WA 425-438-8100 – Interactive displays and hands-on exhibits explain the marvel of commercial jet aviation and the future of powered, winged flight. – Aviation Zones include Flight Deck, Flight Systems, Propulsion/Engines, Materials, Passenger Experience and Future Concepts, plus a special zone for young children. – Visitors can digitally design a jet, test/modify its flight worthiness, and then receive a free personalized print-out of their final design. – Boeing Tour – the only tour of a commercial jet assembly plant in North America (the largest building in the world, measured by volume). Visitors watch 777 and new 787 Dreamliner jets being assembled. – Open to the public – see website for hours and admission prices.

Historic Flight Restoration Center – Paine Field (west side), Mukilteo, WA (206) 348-3200 – Collection of aviation enthusiast John T.

Sales of muscle cars have varied over the years, and it is sometimes seen that they are great polluters and a danger on the road – but this is not necessarily true, and there are several reasons why you may want a muscle car in preference to a regular car.

But what is a muscle car?

Muscle cars are cars with big powerful engines that sit inside a normal sized car body. Engines of that size normally drive a much heavier vehicle.

They were created in 1949 with the introduction of the Oldsmobile Rocket 88, which won 8 out of 10 races in the 1950 NASCAR season.

Sales of these cars exploded in the 1960s with vehicles like the Plymouth GTX and the Ford Mustang, but by the mid 1970s, the cost of fuel was increasing and a tax was levied on such vehicles due to their power. It was perceived that the power of the vehicle was increased at the sacrifice of handling and braking – which is just not true. Driving at high speed requires a certain skill, but when driving at a sensible speed in a muscle car there is no detraction in handling or braking – in many case the vehicles are upgraded versions of standard models, so the handling and braking are SUPERIOR to standard models. The tax affected sales of muscle cars, as the target market of young males found it hard to afford them.

These cars are, of course, still built these days – examples include the Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo. The expense factor is still there however, making it difficult to afford these vehicles. However, new or old, a well looked after muscle car will maintain its value for many years – and muscle cars come from the factory with a finely tuned engine, so their reliability is also very good.

Many are four wheel drive, ensuring they can drive well in conditions that standard 2 wheel drive cars would do best to avoid. With this improved grip and their powerful engines, how easy it is to tow a 2 wheel drive car that has become stuck in a snow drift!

And there is no concern (as there is around so-called ’sports cars’) of not fitting in. Most have 4 or 5 seats compared to the 2 of a sports car, and they are seats of standard size. This of course does not make a muscle car better than a standard car – but at least in this instance they are of equal standing.

So what’s not to like? Better handling than standard models, improved brakes, perfectly tuned engines, high retention of value, four wheel drive, big enough to get you (and the kids!) in comfortably, and best of all – knowing you are in an exclusive club due to the cost of buying one!
